TURBO TALK No. 6 - the Anatomy of a Quitter - MON. 8 AUGUST

Motivational posters love arguing “perseverance” and “dedication” are virtues, but real creative types know these words are tired establishment jargon meant to keep us in the dumps. The actual solution to our many, many, problems? Quitting. What else can turn discomfort and pain into beautifully clean slates of possibility? Learn more about it via these three 30-minute talks delivered at Turbo Haus by exceptional Montrealers. Free for NBCA members, $5 for non-members. Doors at 7:30 PM, talks at 8-10 PM, and it’s at 5011 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest.

TOM DEVLIN (Drawn & Quarterly, drawnandquarterly.com) is currently Executive Editor of “the best comics publisher in the world,” but in November of 2004 he complexly axed, cold-turkey style, the well-loved post-alternative American independent comic publisher Highwater Books.

LUM & DESRANLEAU (Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, lum-desranleau.com) are well-known under their own names and their former Seripop moniker, but they were also the continuous forces behind the noise rock band AIDS Wolf. They started touring Europe and America punishingly in 2003, put out 18 different challenging releases, and quit making music entirely in May of 2012.

HEATHER LOU (Closet Case Files, closetcasefiles.com) had a career in commercial interior design with clients between DC, Doha and down the street, but it was an unfulfilling bore. What crept up on the margins of her life and deposed her old routine a couple years ago? It’s well summed up by her motto: “Head up, needle down, sew forever.”
